French Onions
camping recipe

Category: Vegetables   Rating: N/A
Backpacking: No Effort: easy Serves: 3-4 Prep time: 1-30m

Ingredients:
  • 4 large sweet onions (like Walla Wallas)
  • 4 beef boullion cubes
  • 4 pats (tbs) of butter
  • 4 large squares tin foil

How to Prepare:
Peel papery layers off onion. Slice an X into the top half of each onion and slightly pry open. Place Boullion cube and pat of butter into each onion. Tightly wrap with tin foil (keep cut side up) and cook in campfire coals 25-30 minutes. Unwrap in bowl so you catch all the juice - tastes just like french onion soup. Sprinkle with cheese, if desired.

CAMPING TIP

Bring a supply of band-aids, especially if you're camping with children. Give each child an inexpensive flashlight to use for night-time to prevent accidents.
