Pizza over Charcoal
camping recipe

Category: Pasta   Rating: 10
Backpacking: No Effort: easy Serves: any Prep time: 1-30m

Ingredients:
  • Bread Sticks
  • Shredded Mozzarella Cheese
  • Any Veggies you like
  • Prego Mushroom Sauce
  • Pepperoni
  • Canadian Bacon

How to Prepare:
Slice bread sticks long wise but leave attached like a hotdog bun. Place bread on a 10x10 precut piece of alum. foil (I get them at Sam's Club). Spread sauce sparingly over bread. Sprinkle cheese over bread and add whatever other ingredients you want. The more you use the more difficult it is to get the pizza done. Wrap foil around the pizza and then wrap a second piece of foil around the first to help keep it from burning. Place over charcoal (I've found it better if the pizza's are raised above the coals a little. We use a disposable alum. pan to hold the charcoal and put a grate on the top if we are unable to find an outdoor grill that will do the same job).
Heat only until the cheese is melted and the length of time depends on the temp. of the fire. With a large group, each one makes their own pizza and puts their initials with a sharpie on the top so you can keep them straight. I have also made these in the oven at home without the foil squares. It is best to handle the hot units with tongs and I use heavy leather gloves as I move them around the heat source. Two of these will meet most appetites but let them eat all they want to make. I rarely have anyone eat more than 3. We do this with elementary students my high school PALS students mentor.

CAMPING TIP

Want an inexpensive, waterproof, and fool-proof fire starter? Take a two inch strip of newspaper, roll, and tie with a string, leaving a two inch tail. Then dip the entire roll into parafin. Let dry. This becomes a waterproof candle that is sure to start your fire.
