Category: Poultry   Rating: 3.7
Backpacking: No Effort: easy Serves: 3-4 Prep time: 60m+
  • take a 3 lb. coffee can & using an old time beer bottle opener pop 6-7 holes on the side @ the bottom of can. then place 13 brickets in can, soak & lite. Have a chicken (3.25 lb. works best) but no more than 3.5lbs.
  • Have seasoned to yo likings but don't fill the cavity too full for lack of the bird being able to ventilate. Wrap in Reynolds X-tra Heavy foil with feet to the top, place carefully in can and forget it for a 6 pack or so (2 hrs.)

In this tip I'll use the method and materials I used. I took a broken shovel handle and sawed off the splintered end and drilled a hole about two and a half, maybe three inches deep, right in the center.I then took a broken ro-tis-ary (I don't know how to actually spell it, so just sound it out.) and sawed off the end with a handle. I then took the spikes on the far end and slid them off the rod, and turned them to where the pointed ends were all facing the same direction. I tightened the prongs down as tight as possible, filled the hole about halfway with gorilla glue, and let it set over night. I now have a hotdog roaster that holds eight or more hot dogs, no telling how many marshmallows, and in survival situations, a fine fish or frog gig.
